Pelican House Woven Art Exhibition

The Marwar Collection takes its name from the school of miniature painting that grew up in the Rajput courts of Rajasthan. Under the wider umbrella of Rajput art, and drawing on Mughal influence, it answered to its own eye, its own stories, techniques and local knowledge, shaped by the light and landscape of Marwar. Its miniature painters filled the page with deities, animals, birds and flowers, with scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and with the legends and folktales passed down through generations. It remains one of the great pillars of Rajasthan's cultural heritage, an increasingly rare craft still valued by collectors and still a living source of income for the artists and families who carry it forward.

We've translated that world into wool. The Marwar Collection is conceived as one body of work rather than fourteen separate pieces. A single, earthy palette runs the length of the collection; terracotta and deep red, ochre and gold, sage and olive greens, blush pink and cream, the tones of the source paintings themselves, and the thread that lets every design sit in conversation with the next.

Every piece is made in collaboration with craftspeople across India and Nepal, whose skill carries the same lineage as the miniature paintings that inspired it. Each design has been co-created to bring the history and heritage of Marwar together with their techniques and ancestral knowledge. This is what enables us to honour their artisanship while giving it a contemporary flair, and treat the rug not as a floor covering but as an art form in its own right.
